Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays guys, here's this year's Christmas card. Marty and Morty saw this perfect tree just right on top of that mountain, but trouble always seems to find them! Click to enlarge!

'Doc Dogmatic' and the CCER 2013.

Just like last year, a lot of artists created artwork for Jon Esparza's 'Crazy Cartoon Experiment'. As before, the main subject was to draw a helium filled dog that was about to bump into a cactus. You can imagine what happens next! Jon asked if I wanted to participate this time around but, I just couldn't leave it at that and created the scene above with some very ingenious mutts and a whole bunch of cactusses! (Click to enlarge).

For this scene, I needed some sort of Mayan pyramid, something resembling the one in Chichen Itza, but far less detailed, something that would fit the cartoony style. I modeled a low poly pyramid in Maya with a little more than 3000 vertices and imported it into Photoshop CC. Using it's native 3D features I integrated it with the rest of the artwork (click to enlarge).

While I was in the middle of things, I came down with the flu. Fortunately, after a few days I felt much better, but had to keep the Mayans as simple as possible to make the deadline. Which wasn't really terrible, as they're supposed to be far away and not have too much detail anyway. Below is a little breakdown of the main characters.

Swamped!

As I've been working in 3D the whole month, I didn't really have much time to follow up on my posts, much less commit to post stuff for #inktober, as much of my Twitter pals. But here's a little piece I did manage to squeeze in today.

Crocodiles!

Holy snacks! Drawing some crocodiles for lunch today!! See ya later Alligator!

Huey, Dewey & Louie.

I love the oldschool nephews Carl Barks drew in his Duck stories from the 1940's, they're so elegant and absolutely geometrical, still very much like the Huey, Dewey and Louie from the old model sheets they used at Disney Animation back then. So whenever I have time I like to draw one!

'Boy, what a charmer!'

Working on some new illustrations! Pencils and inks on this one are ready, off to coloring! If you want to see a higher res version, just click the image!

Morty - Aircourier!

I've been writing some stuff and doing some artwork for an upcoming Morty story. Not yet finished, but hey, here's a little peek!

Euro Crisis!

A quick gag about the Euro crisis...  Any similarity with me or persons close to me is of course purely coincidental!

My Artograph Lightpad A940.

Alright, finally! My Artograph Lightpad A940 arrived yesterday! I've been wanting to buy a new lightbox, but working digitally all the time feeds that little voice inside your head that, maybe you don't need it and you could use the money for more important things, like icecream and beer. But I promised myself I would, and so I did. I think this might be the best deal I've ever done!

I've always wanted to do one of those cool 'unboxing' videos, like you see guys always do on YouTube, but I haven't got time for that. so, here are some stills from my 'unproduced unboxing' video! It all started with a huge box...

The Artograph Lightpad comes in various sizes, but because I do most my drawing on standard A3 paper, I thought it would be wise to invest in a somewhat larger size, althought this does take a bigger chunk out of your wallet. There's also the A2 variant, which is the biggest, but that would just be insane!

Yay! It looked pretty awesome from the outside, and has this great high-tech sci-fi thing going on. Like I actually got hold of Luke's original lightsaber and was granted access to the Jedi Academy.

Okay, hope you can forgive the mess, it was a busy day! The Artograph comes in a soft, protective sleeve and has some assets to the right, like power chords, a manual and some silicone feet that you have to attach to the bottom.

Do you see that? That's how thin it is! Isn't that's amazing! Remember all those HUGE lightboxes in the past? Hello 2013! This is strictly LED, baby!

And there he is! It's a boy! It's much larger than A3 and fits nicely one any table in our studio. But it's lightweight, so you can easily pick it up and take it with you.

Plugged it in and with the hit of a little switch it's on! My crappy photo may not give the best impression, as the Artograph gives off more light than an average rocket Lauch at Johnson Space Center! This photo was taken in broad daylight, and you can clearly see that my funny stuff shows through the thicker drawing paper really well. Awesome! Thanks Artograph! Check here for all Artograph lightpads.

Shark Attack!

Oh NO! Marty got himself in trouble again! Working on some pencils tonight, here's the WIP (work in progress). Click image for a larger view.

Character design.

Some characters I designed way back for a comics project. The inking was never finished, but I found it today and thought I put it up here, 'cause I still like it! Still used my trusted Davinci brushes Kolinsky to get some cool inks done then (Click to enlarge).

Feeling the 1950's vibe.

I just love the stylized animations produced during the 1950's. The stuff they did back then feels so jazzy! I came up with this illustration over the weekend. I think I used no more than two or three colors in the end, just pushing the design further using various tones.

Valentinesday.

Reblogged from my other blog. This was originally dated February 14th:

It's Valentinesday today. It seems even Marty's in love too! But wouldn't it be better to have this day in spring? It's snowing here today... again! Have a good one everybody!

Turtle with Mice.

Reblogged from my other blog. Post was originally dated February 7th:

Here's some fun color artwork I did yesterday, didn't have much of a sketch to begin with, just started fleshing it out in Photoshop, which is of course not recommended! Still, had a lot of fun though. Just hit the image for full scale size.

More Sketching.

Reblogged from my other blog (originally dated February 13th):

Some more sketches of a few gags I've been playing with the other night. Here Marty goes to a Museum and everything falls apart (quite literally I must say). Click the images for a high res view.

Nemo coming to NYC - One minute sketching.

Reblogged this from my other blog to keep things seperated, now that I have this sketchblog. Post was originally dated February 9th:

So today New York was hit by a huge blizzard called Nemo. Apparently snow is up to 14 inches high and 500.000 people are without power...again. It's snowing here too at the moment, so here are some one minute sketches I did when I heard the news. Click to enlarge.

Morty cut-out animation.

Several parts of Morty used for a simple cut-out animation,  where he was throwing snowsballs.

First drawing lesson.

Little caveman on his way to paint the Mona Lisa but hey... that's not into fashion yet, so he'll be doing some nice animal doodles instead! Pencil and inks on paper, colors and fire/smoke fx were done in Photoshop afterwards.

Marty & Morty designs.

One of my earliest sketches of Marty and Morty. Still looking for a nice design. Sometimes I like early designs better then the final version. They can be just a little more oddball and screwy and less stylised.

Marty & Morty.

Here's a bit of Marty & Morty from a while ago. Might still do a web comic of some sorts with them in the future, althought I'm not quite sure if I still like the vertical layout. I did that cause I thought horizontal strips wouldn't go well with webdesigns, image size wise.

A cup of Joe.

So, I started this online sketchbook a little while ago to have a place where I can put all my little doodles and funny little sketches. I think I'll start off today with a few character sketches of Joe Carioca below. He's the Brazillian Parrot from Disney's 1944 feature 'The three Caballeros', but he also has his own comics strips today. Funny, a few years ago I did a regular comic for a client that had a very similar sort of character. Well, he was also parrot and he was green... Joe is of course the perfect poor little rascal, just like for example Top Cat. I guess they' re all based on Chaplin in some way or another.
